Fallen Angel, Part 1

Day 44. 111 pages, 50,534 words.

Day 717 (Centre / Mind standard). Reactor at 98% efficiency. Batteries at 100% and stable. Recycling systems condition green (sustainable). Air supply condition green (sustainable). Sleep chamber effective durability at 36%. Estimated depletion of raw materials for nutrient fabricator 492,000 days.

Predericon stopped at the end of the official logistics statement, as she always did. The only thing to have changed since their crash landing was the sleep chamber’s effective durability dropping by 5%, and the raw materials estimation dropping from 493,000 days. This didn’t mean they’d actually lost a thousand days in a mere seven hundred and seventeen – or if it did, then they’d probably find out around Day 1400. It was a long-term problem in any case.

She sighed. After almost two years, there was little else to do but repeat herself.

Gyden says we should wake up Old Man Lelhmak. Even though deactivation of the sleep chamber would add nothing to the reactor efficiency, risk air supply downgrade to unsustainable, and advance the nutrient depletion to under 330,000 days.

Nevertheless, I am beginning to think she could be right.

Again Predericon stopped, and tapped moodily at her teeth with the fingers of her upper left hand. Then she leaned back into the little island of light cast by the log interface.

Gyden returned to base during lull yesterday (Centre / Mind standard), stayed for two hours and then headed out again. No further developments on the signal, if it was anything other than an anomaly or sensor ghost. Nothing sensors pick up can be dependably confirmed as a known signal. Systems are still collating data on the new physical configuration-

She sighed, and deleted the half-sentence.

The ship still has no idea what happened to the Four Realms.

Predericon sat back again, then leaned in and closed with the same series of statements – these ones not even adjusted for the latest diagnostic scan.

No further communications received. No life signs found. Investigation of possible planetary bodies deeper in-system on hold pending ship repair and sensor overhaul. Ship repair and sensor overhaul on hold pending location of suitable raw materials.

Researcher Predericon Ti Akmet, Lelhmak’s Moon.

Log ends.

About Hatboy

I’m not often driven to introspection or reflection, but the question does come up sometimes. The big question. So big, there’s just no containing it within the puny boundaries of a single set of punctuationary bookends. Who are these mysterious and unsung heroes of obscurity and shadow? What is their origin story? Do they have a prequel trilogy? What are their secret identities? What are their public identities, for that matter? What are their powers? Their abilities? Their haunted pasts and troubled futures? Their modus operandi? Where do they live anyway, and when? What do they do for a living? Do they really have these fantastical adventures, or is it a dazzlingly intellectual and overwrought metaphor? Or is it perhaps a smug and post-modern sort of metaphor? Is it a plain stupid metaphor, hedged around with thick wads of plausible deniability, a soap bubble of illusory plot dependent upon readers who don’t dare question it for fear of looking foolish? A flight of fancy, having dozed off in front of the television during an episode of something suitably spaceship-oriented? Do they have a quest, a handler, a mission statement, a department-level development objective in five stages? I am Hatboy. https://hatboy.blog/2013/12/17/metalude-who-are-creepy-and-hatboy/

  1. Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhh…. I almost started setting up math equations, by the way. Careful!

“yabba dabba doo” I’m worried about you bro

Oh, nitpick, but I think you should put a time (your choice as to format and units etc. of course) in that log entry at the start if you’re going to write “adjusted local time”. Minor detail.

    • stchucky says:

It’s their official practice for logging days. Technically they started at zero and are counting the days by their own home calendar which has no correspondence to the time periods passing by local standards. If it’s confusing, I can remove or rephrase it. Not adding a time though.

    • stchucky says:

But yeah, I get it. It’s not really what I’m trying to say at all, since it’s actually an acknowledgement that they’re ignoring local time … I just didn’t want to add any further boring technical details to a section that’s meant to be boring, but not too boring. Monotony, but readable.

So any suggestions you might have, fire away.

    • stchucky says:

Might just amend to “Centre / Mind standard”. It’ll be a bit of a mystery, but only to all the readers not in possession of the facts.
