So we all know the generic US police force motto, To Protect And To Serve. Actually the LAPD motto, but that’s the one we see in all the movies and it’s been adopted by other US police forces as well.
Did you know that since 1959 the New South Wales[1] Police Force motto has been Culpam Poena Premit Comes? And it means Punishment Swiftly Follows Crime?
[1] That’s the state in Australia where Sydney is. Just so you know.
That’s hardcore.

About Hatboy
I’m not often driven to introspection or reflection, but the question does come up sometimes. The big question. So big, there’s just no containing it within the puny boundaries of a single set of punctuationary bookends.
Who are these mysterious and unsung heroes of obscurity and shadow? What is their origin story? Do they have a prequel trilogy? What are their secret identities? What are their public identities, for that matter? What are their powers? Their abilities? Their haunted pasts and troubled futures? Their modus operandi? Where do they live anyway, and when? What do they do for a living? Do they really have these fantastical adventures, or is it a dazzlingly intellectual and overwrought metaphor? Or is it perhaps a smug and post-modern sort of metaphor? Is it a plain stupid metaphor, hedged around with thick wads of plausible deniability, a soap bubble of illusory plot dependent upon readers who don’t dare question it for fear of looking foolish? A flight of fancy, having dozed off in front of the television during an episode of something suitably spaceship-oriented? Do they have a quest, a handler, a mission statement, a department-level development objective in five stages?
I am Hatboy.

Leave Australia alone! LEAVE HER ALONE!!!!!!! *tears smearing mascara down face*
Classic.
Seriously though, NSW police were super corrupt in the early 90s. I had no idea until I researched this.
Well, to be fair, it is a dangerous job, whose number one priority is for the cop to make it home safely. At least that’s what they say here in the US. It’s almost as dangerous a job as fishing or working at a lumber mill. And by “almost”, I mean there are only 10 other more dangerous jobs than being a cop besides those 2.
So…hmm.
And, also to be fair, at least the NSW police aren’t lying with all this lofty “protect” and “serve” bullplop. And Latin is tricky, it doesn’t necessarily specify that the punishment is going to be for the criminal.
Mind you, the protect and serve motto doesn’t exactly specify either, does it? I mean I always assumed an unwritten “whitey” at the end…
Man this got cynical fast. Like, from comment 1 fast.
LOL
To paraphrase Trump paraphrasing the bible, “You knew I was a cynic when you let me in”.
