Day 46. 161 pages, 58,131 words.
Well, that guy was a whiny bore. Let’s not let him out again.
With any luck I will be back in business by Monday, if I can get my stupid computer back in shape and haven’t done too much damage to the monitor by lifting it up and bashing it against my office wall.
In the meantime I do have some posts to add for the weekend, thanks to scandalous misappropriation of office resources and the revival of Mopho Cake III. But let’s see.
Off to check out Doctor Strange tonight. Will be interesting to see how that is as well.
I had an amorphous “isn’t whitewashing a black or Asian character exactly the same problem as replacing a white character with a non-white one, so why do SJWs yell about the former but applaud the latter?” bit of trollosophising rattling around in my head, but I don’t think I have the time or energy to get into it (except, you know, for the rambling below). I think I’ll just conclude that it is basically the same, the main difference being in the dominant / oppressed-or-underrepresented dichotomy between the two cases.
The former is whitey piling more onto his own cultural plate at the expense of the others. The latter is a bit of plate-redistribution that we can all afford to calm down about.
But, because I do think the two cases are essentially similar, I’m not really bothered by either of them. It’s probably insensitive of me – look, I know there is a difference in the cases and it’s unfortunate when whitewashing happens, I think I acknowledged and showed my understanding of the distinction in the previous couple of paragraphs – but what can I say? I’m a white heterosexual male in my 30s. I can afford to have a consistent standard in my opinion of this issue. Goddamn privileged shitlord, that’s me.
Plus, I think if the Ancient One could have been Tilda Swinton, he would have jumped at the chance. And doesn’t the gender swap cancel out the whitewash?
