Interlude: Nearly-closing metrics

Day 59. 206 pages, 98,919 words.

If all goes well, I will be finishing the book in the next few days. The word-count graph is not quite complete, therefore – there will probably be a few thousand more words to add – but here it is anyway.

Looking healthy.

While I haven’t actually finished writing them yet, I have already got them planned out and know who will be representing in the last couple of chapters. Therefore, I can complete and post the chapter-representation pie chart as is becoming traditional.

Golly!

I hope that intrigues you just a little bit. Yes, there is a big wedge of miscellaneous mystery-characters in this one[1]. Don’t worry, though – I’m not going all George RR Martin and introducing a whole lot of random new and pointless characters to replace the interesting main characters who I’ve killed off. Or am I…?

[1] That purple, however, is still Janus Whye. So there are no Captain chapters here. You’re still going to have to trust me, people.

No. No I’m not.

Anyway, this strange array of character-point-of-view figures leads to a skew in the whole-series pie chart of the same statistics.

Bam.

As you can see, the miscellaneous crowd now forms a nice big wedge, with Glomulus Cratch just slightly behind, followed by Z-Lin, Janya and Waffa. As you can also see, I finally added Maladin, Dunnkirk and Rakmanmorion to my dictionary.

I may have to come up with a new way of defining the miscellaneous guys, or perhaps some sub-categories … but then again, there’s already plenty of slices in this pie.

I’m also mildly curious to see a chart showing chapter-representation by page-number or word-count, because chapters range from 13-14 pages all the way down to 2-3 pages, in the rough draft. So just having your name at the top of the page doesn’t mean you’re getting equal representation with the next point-of-view character. But I don’t have time for that right now.

That’s it. Carry on.

When will your editors get the drafts?

I know that bit was in there because I complain so much about that one character who died in that one book WHO WAS URTERLY EFFING POINTLESS!
